⚠️ Change from 1 October 2026: surcharging Visa and Mastercard payments is generally no longer permitted in Australia — for most businesses, absorbing card fees (or building them into your pricing) becomes the way forward. See Changes to card surcharging (from 1 October 2026).
When you take a card payment there's a processing fee. You can pass it on to the customer, or cover it yourself.
Surcharging (pass it on)
Switch Enable Surcharging on in a location's Settings → Payment Settings. The fee is added at checkout, so the customer pays it and your takings stay whole. On donation products, Donation Surcharging lets the donor choose to cover it.
Absorbing (cover it yourself)
Leave surcharging off, and the customer pays exactly the listed price while you cover the fee — the simplest, friendliest checkout.
To turn surcharging on or off, see Setting up surcharging.
